Oliver is a bright, joyful twelve-year-old girl whose surname literally translates to “happiness when older.” Originally from Wakiso District in central Uganda, her mother and siblings moved to Jinja after the death of their father in 2004.
In 2008, Amazima’s social worker Christine recognized that Oliver was not consistently attending school, but only attending when her mother could afford it. Amazima gave Oliver the opportunity to attend school, relieving her mother of the heavy burden of paying school fees.
Oliver is now in the 4th grade and her favorite class is Mathematics. She is an excellent student and takes her studies seriously.
At home, Oliver is usually responsible for sweeping and mopping the floors. However, since her Grandmother has been ill for a few months, Oliver has taken on other chores at home, such as cooking and washing clothes, as well as looking after her younger siblings while her mother is away attending to her Grandmother.
Oliver’s career goal is to be a doctor. She says she wants to learn how to treat people in her community. “I like it so much when the nurse comes to school and teaches about health,” she shares.
She also looks forward to when Raoul leads Bible Study and music at school every Wednesday – she especially loves to dance!
