SPONSORSHIP WEEK at Amazima: Meet Adam

In Uganda, one of the most disturbing underlying cultural beliefs is that people with mental disabilities, especially children, are either cursed and/or “mulalu” (crazy). This strong belief usually results in the neglect, abandonment, or even abuse of the mentally disabled. There is very little education in Uganda about mental disorders or disabilities, especially in more rural parts of the country.

Adam is a six year old boy who lives in Buziika, Uganda with his mother and 5 siblings. Among his 2 brothers and 3 sisters, Adam is the only child who is mentally disabled (believed to have Downs Syndrome). He has been this way since birth. Adam’s mother is unique in that she really loves and cares for Adam, despite the cultural norm.

Amazima sends Adam to Nursery School, where he enjoys learning and playing. Although he is accepted/loved at home, school is a different story. The kids often pick on him, even though he really likes interacting with them. Even the teachers at this school have asked Adam’s mother to remove him from class, saying that he doesn’t even learn or understand anything. But Adam’s mother has stood strong against the complete insensitivity of the teachers. Adam continues to go to school, and will continue to do so as long as Amazima advocates on his behalf.

Adam’s brother is also in the Amazima program.  And unfortunately, Adam's father is not consistently involved in the family life.

For fun, Adam likes playing soccer. He also really enjoys fetching water. Adam is affectionate, trusting, and very adorable.  He loves to give and receive hugs.

Adam is cared for by a family in Amazima's sponsorship program.  But there are many children like Adam waiting to be sponsored.  Visit our website to learn more.  Thank you!
